There has recently been an explosion in teeth whitening kits for sale, and some of them are very expensive. It is possible to whiten your teeth at home with things that you could well have in your first aid kit and baking cupboard. Toothpastes and mouthwashes that match the commercial preparations can be easily made as well.

Take about two teaspoons of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and put it in a cup. Now add about two teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide and mix the two together to form a paste. You can add flavouring if you want to, the traditional one being a drop of peppermint essential oil.

You use this paste to brush your teeth, trying to make sure it stays in contact with your teeth for at least two minutes. The paste should not be swallowed, but the small amount you are using will do no harm. If the taste remains in your mouth then brush your teeth afterwards with normal toothpaste. This method will work for coffee and nicotine stains very well.

If you have sores, ulcers or cavities this should not be used. It is best used no more than once a week as it works through a mild abrasive action, as do many of the commercial preparations.

While the baking soda very well may provide an abrasive action, hydrogen peroxide (or compounds that break down into hydrogen peroxide) is the "active ingredient" found in most forms of teeth whitening products. Its whitening effect is produced by chemical means within a tooth's enamel layer.
